Chelsea decided to intervene after central defender Wesley Fofana pleaded guilty to road traffic offenses last week.

The club took the time to speak to the player following his conviction for dangerous driving near the Cobham training center. If the Blues do not generally have the habit of sanctioning their players for extra-sporting reasons, the recurrence of Fofana’s conduct problems justified a reaction.

According to The Athletic, Chelsea considered it “important” to address the issue of Fofana’s driving behavior during a meeting with the player. Although extra-sporting issues are often left to the players and their representatives to deal with, the Blues management felt that this situation required a firmer stance. There is no indication that Chelsea have imposed any punishment on the Frenchman following his court conviction, but it shows that the club is taking the issue seriously.

Dangerous and illegal driving caught on camera

An on-board camera filmed Fofana’s Lamborghini driving illegally on the hard shoulder (a refuge area on major UK roads) of the A3 ring road in Esher, Surrey, and weaving between vehicles, in April 2025. This footage was handed over to local police and Fofana appeared in court last week. The player did not dispute the accusations and only confirmed his name, address and date of birth. As the hard shoulder is used by broken down vehicles waiting for help, the risk of collision is high and such reckless driving could prove fatal.

Withdrawal of license for Fofana

In May, a month after the incident but before his appearance, Fofana was banned from driving following eight speeding violations. He had 47 points on his license, the threshold of 12 points leading to compulsory withdrawal. Even before the sanctions for the April offense, Fofana is not allowed to drive until May 2027, a two-year suspension. Ultimately, he only received an 18-month license suspension for illegal driving in April, with no further sanction in this regard. However, Fofana was ordered to carry out 300 hours of community service, as well as pay £85 in court costs and a victim surcharge of £114. The fine is derisory for a professional footballer, but he will have to pay his time debt to society for many months.
