After its convincing success at Chelsea (1-2) during the previous day, Sunderland (7th) had the opportunity to take second place in the event of a victory against Everton (15th), at the end of this 10th day. But things did not go as planned for the Black Cats. Dominated during the first 25 minutes, Sunderland conceded the opening score of Toffees on a superb individual action from Iliman Ndiaye (19th). David Moyes’ men could have made the break a few minutes later, but Grealish’s shot hit Roefs’ right post (22nd), while Thierno Barry – in search of his first goal with Everton – missed the inevitable (28th).

After half an hour of play, Sunderland revolted and increased their attacks on Jordan Pickford’s cage. It was finally at the start of the second period that Régis Le Bris’ players were rewarded, thanks to a shot from Granit Xhaka, deflected by Tarkowski (46th, 1-1). The two teams then went blow for blow in a very noisy Stadium of Light. But they ended in a draw (1-1). Sunderland therefore misses a great opportunity to take the place of runner-up and are fourth, before going to Arsenal. Everton goes up one step and 14th.
