Manchester United are interested in Jarrad Branthwaite, Everton’s central defender, and would like to recruit him in January, but would have to pay a sum comparable to that paid for Harry Maguire.

This is according to CaughtOffside, who report that Man Utd and Tottenham are both in the running to secure the services of the Everton defender.

United have long admired Branthwaite

United have long admired Branthwaite and see him as a future pillar of their defense.

However, Everton are not willing to sell him and it would take a transfer fee of the caliber of Harry Maguire’s for the club to make way.

Man Utd’s interest in Branthwaite

United had previously attempted to sign Branthwaite in the summer of 2024, but failed to reach an agreement with Everton, who turned down an offer of around €55 million. Over the past two years, Branthwaite has established himself as one of the most promising young defenders in English football.

The 23-year-old, standing at 1.96m tall, joined Everton from Carlisle in 2020 and has since enjoyed a meteoric rise.

He spent the 2022-23 season on loan at PSV Eindhoven and impressed in the club’s Dutch Cup victory. Branthwaite returned to Everton for the 2023-24 season and has become a key player, helping to keep the club going despite a points penalty.

He played 41 matches and was voted Everton’s Young Player of the Season. Last season, Branthwaite played 32 matches in all competitions. This season, he is injured and unavailable, but he has a selection for the England team.
