Vinicius Jr’s gesture of humor during the Clasico against FC Barcelona (2-1) last week continues to hit the headlines. Xabi Alonso decided to replace his striker in the 72nd minute to bring in Rodrygo.
This decision angered Vinicius, who, after uttering an insult, headed towards the locker room. If he finally returned to sit on the substitutes’ bench before the end of the match, the player would have, according to the DAZN Spain channel, threatened to leave the club.
Rivaldo steps up for Vinicius
Asked about this at a press conference, Xabi Alonso chose not to fuel the controversy. However, he clarified that the Vinicius file would be resolved “privately”. The Merengue number 7 finally publicly apologized, before his coach subsequently announced that “the subject is closed”.
The atmosphere now seems calmer among the Spanish vice-champions, but some observers consider Vinicius’ management incomprehensible. Former Seleção and Barça legend Rivaldo has also questioned the frequency with which his compatriot is replaced.
“Replacing him seven times in a row is too much. A player like Vinicius, who is worth so much to Real Madrid, should not come out in such an important match.”he declared in comments relayed by Marca. The 1999 Ballon d’Or condemned Vinicius’ comments, while affirming that he “remains the best in the world today”.
