Another failure for Vieira

A brilliant playing career in no way guarantees as much success on the bench. The Frenchman Patrick Vieira, 49 years old, has had the bitter experience. The 1998 world and 2000 European champion is no longer the current coach of Genoa
last in the Serie A standings.

The club would like to thank the coach and his staff for the seriousness and professionalism demonstrated during their work and sends them the best for the rest of their careers”wrote the Italian club on Saturday in a press release. The interim will be provided by Roberto Murgita and Domenico Criscito, Monday evening in Sassuolo (10th day of the Italian Championship).

If we knew the former Arsenal midfielder was weakened, the news is a little surprise because the president of Genoa had kept Patrick Vieira in his position on Friday, two days after a home defeat against Cremonese (0-2, 9th day).

A clean track record

Patrick Vieira arrived in Genoa in November 2024 and ensured the club’s maintenance in the elite of Italian football, with a 13th place at the end of the 2024-2025 season. The ex-Juventus and Inter player in particular has not been more successful in his previous experiences as a coach.

At OGC Nice (2018-Dec. 2020), Crystal Palace (2021-March 2023) or Strasbourg (2023-2024), Patrick Vieira was unable to settle in for the long term. It was at New York FC where he spent the most time as coach: 90 matches in charge between January 2016 and June 2018, one more than with the Nice Aiglons.
