The shock was brutal, the reaction immediate: the serious injury of Malick Fofana upset Olympique Lyonnais. Victim of a serious sprain of his right ankle during the victory against Strasbourg (2-1), the young Belgian winger will be absent for several months. A hard blow for Paulo Fonseca, as Fofana embodied the percussion and creativity of the Lyon attack. But the club was quick to get involved, already considering solutions to fill this offensive void.

Afonso Moreira, the internal joker to replace Malick Fofana

Constrained by DNCG restrictions and a limited budget before January, OL will not recruit an offensive joker. The staff therefore decided to rely on an internal option: Afonso Moreira, 20 years old, recently arrived from Sporting Portugal. The young winger revealed himself at the best moment: coming on in the 68th minute against Strasbourg, he offered the victory in stoppage time with a splendid curling shot. Four days earlier, he had already scored against Basel in the Europa League. Two goals in 122 minutes: formidable efficiency which won over Fonseca and the entire locker room.

In the Lyon group, the praise is raining down. “He really launched his career,” confided Moussa Niakhaté, when Corentin Tolisso greeted “a hardworking and humble player, rewarded for his patience”. For a club that advocates the relaunch of young talents, Moreira perfectly embodies the Lyon philosophy: trained in a major European club, capable of adapting quickly and responding under pressure. Fonseca, who appreciates wingers who are disciplined and capable of defending, already seems convinced.

Limited alternatives but a real opportunity

Paulo Fonseca could also reposition Pavel Šulc on the left side or offer playing time to Rachid Ghezzal, but neither option presents the same explosiveness. Adam Karabec, on loan from Verona, has a more central profile. Moreira ticks all the boxes: percussion, freshness, verticality and hunger to prove. Internally, we even talk about a “mini-Fofana” to highlight its similarities with the Belgian.

While waiting for a possible reinforcement in January (Neal Maupay is mentioned), OL is relying on its young Portuguese. Both promoted by necessity and driven by his talent, Afonso Moreira becomes much more than a simple replacement: he embodies Lyon's new promise. His mission? Prolong the club's dynamic and make us forget, at least temporarily, the absence of the most decisive player at the start of the season. In Lyon, the baton has already been passed.
