José Manuel Ochotorena, former Spanish goalkeeper, died this Monday at the age of 64 following an illness. He distinguished himself at Real Madrid, winning a League Cup, three Spanish championships and two UEFA Cups, before having his best period at Valencia CF, where he finished runner-up in Spain during the 1988-1989 season and won the Trofeo Zamora for the best goalkeeper in the championship. His performances also earned him selection for the 1990 World Cup in Italy. He then finished his career at Tenerife, Racing de Santander and Logroñés.
After his playing career, Ochotorena devoted himself to training goalkeepers, first at Valencia then at Liverpool with Rafael BenĂtez, before working for more than twenty years with the Spanish selection, preparing goalkeepers for the 2010 World Cup and the 2008 and 2012 Euros. He helped train renowned goalkeepers like Iker Casillas, Victor ValdĂ©s and David De Gea. The Valencian club describes it as a “legend of our club and a reference in Spanish football”tribute to an exceptional career on and off the field.
