Julien Odoul, RN deputy (National Rally – far right) from Yonne and spokesperson for the party, recently commented on Olivier Giroud's statements in Le Figaro on X. The Losc striker explained why he did not choose to join Saudi Arabia or China, two of the most lucrative destinations for future football retirees, citing above all the sporting project, respect for his Christian faith and his personal values.
Odoul reacted with a simple: “It’s a change from Benzema”comparing Giroud's choice to that of the 2022 Ballon d'Or, who decided to end his career in Saudi Arabia. A message, to which it is difficult not to attribute nauseating intentions linked to the origins and religion of the former Lyonnais and Madrilenian. Internet users reacted to it quite quickly in the comments section.
Some reminded Julien Odoul that Benzema continues to pay his taxes in France and has never been found guilty of embezzlement of public funds, contrary to past controversies concerning him himself. Others denounce political opportunism to excite those who are looking for the slightest opportunity to pay Karim Benzema.
Giroud didn't ask for anything
It is important to remember that Olivier Giroud has never had any links with the RN and has always been very open and tolerant in his speeches. However, it is on the simple evocation of his Christian faith that the bet chaired by Jordan Bardella, via Julien Odoul, seems to want to appropriate his image, creating a debate on political recovery in sport.
This story clearly illustrates how players' career choices and personal beliefs can be exploited for political purposes. Giroud continues to defend his values and his love of football, and to perform well with Lille at 39 years old. The former Montpellier, Arsenal, Chelsea and Milan striker should be there on Sunday evening, against Nantes, at the end of the 8th day of Ligue 1.
