Liverpool hosted Manchester United this Sunday at Anfield for the 8th day of the Premier League. And the clash got off to a flying start: in the 2nd minute, Bryan Mbeumo took advantage of a deflected shot to open the scoring and give the Red Devils the advantage. The Reds tried to react, but struggled to appear dangerous despite possession largely in their favor.

The following minutes were punctuated by clear chances on both sides. Liverpool, notably through Gakpo and Salah, hit the post twice and multiplied the number of missed shots on target. For their part, United were solid on the counterattack and forced Mamardashvili to make several decisive interventions.

As the first half progressed, Liverpool gradually found their rhythm and multiplied the combinations, but precision was lacking in the zone of truth. Gakpo, Salah and Isak came close to equalizing, but the post and Lammens kept United ahead. In the two technical zones, the tension rose, testifying to the intensity of this historic derby.

A first for United in 9 years

In the second half, Liverpool pushed again to try to turn the situation around. Gakpo hit the post again and Salah missed a one-on-one from close range. The entry of Ekitiké brought a little dynamism to the Reds' attack, but clear chances were rare against a well-organized Manchester United defense.

Liverpool finally reduced the gap thanks to Gakpo, who took a powerful cross from Kerkez in the 78th minute, igniting Anfield. But Manchester United held on and regained the advantage a few minutes later: on a rejected corner, Fernandes perfectly served Maguire, whose header found the back of the net (85th).

The eight minutes of added time were not enough for the Reds to come back to the score. Liverpool lost 2-1, their fourth consecutive defeat in the league, while Manchester United won at Anfield for the first time in nine years.
