Before being the captain of the 98 world champion and 2000 European champion French team, Didier Deschamps was an early prodigy in the championship. A small phenomenon from the FC Nantes training center, becoming captain of the Canaries at the age of 19, the defensive midfielder was recruited two years later by Bernard Tapie's OM. However, “La Dèche” was too faded during the 1989-1990 season with the Phocéens alongside Franck Sauzée and Jean Tigana in the midfield.

Tapie then decides to loan Deschamps to the Girondins de Bordeaux for two seasons! The site Girondins4ever returns to the course at the club with the scapular of the Basque who has just celebrated his 67th birthday (he was born on October 15). “In Bordeaux, in a club which was beginning to show signs of fragility, the young Deschamps, aged 22, was a basic player for (Raymond) Goethals then for (Gérard) Gili”we can read.

Already a French international under Michel Platini, Didier Deschamps behaves like the boss of the Gironde team. He accompanies the captains Joseph-Antoine Bell, Patrick Battiston and Jean-Marc Ferreri, while being teammates of two great French hopes, a little younger than him, Bixente Lizarazu and Christophe Dugarry, with whom he will obviously win the 98 World Cup and Euro 2000.

Tapie sends Deschamps to PSG!

The Girondins, who finished 7th in the D1 standings, were administratively relegated to the second division at the end of a political-financial saga (the club is subject to a tax adjustment of 10 million francs). Deschamps then asks to leave this immense hassle, he categorically refuses to stay. Bernard Tapie planned to leave him for a second year in Aquitaine and, worse, the Marseille boss will then offer the player to PSG in exchange for Jocelyn Angloma! Deschamps convinces his president to continue the adventure in Provence.

A tireless recuperator and incredible leader on the pitch, Didier Deschamps will very quickly become the captain of the Marseille team but also of the French team throughout the Euro 92 qualifiers. In the process, it is he who is appointed captain of OM upon the departure of Jean-Pierre-Papin. At the end of the 1992-1993 season, he became the very first captain to lift the Champions League trophy with a French club.
