The 2026 World Cup, organized jointly by the United States, Canada and Mexico, will be Didier Deschamps' last competition as coach of the France team. After fourteen years in this position, the 56-year-old technician will probably have Zinédine Zidane as his successor.
“I will definitely come back to coach. (…) I don’t know what the future holds for me, but I would like to coach the France team one day. We’ll see,” confided the former Blues playmaker this Sunday, on the sidelines of the Sports Festival in Trento, Italy.
On paper, the 1998 Ballon d'Or seems to be the ideal candidate to become the 17th coach in the history of the Blues. The native of Marseille had already confirmed his desire to occupy this position a few months earlier.
Zidane coach of the Blues, obvious
“I put my career on hold for a bit, but I feel 100% a coach. As I feel legitimate, the French team, I played there, I was a player for practically 12, 13 or 14 years. Of course it’s a desire, it’s a desire”he declared to Foot Mercatoon the sidelines of an Adidas event organized last May, on the Champs-Élysées.
As a reminder, the man nicknamed “Zizou” has not been on the sidelines since 2021. With Real Madrid, he won eleven titles as a coach, including three Champions Leagues consecutively (2016, 2017 and 2018).
