Still no return for Paul Pogba. While he hoped to make his debut with AS Monaco, the French midfielder relapsed, further postponing his return to competition. The 2018 world champion has not played again for more than two years. Despite everything, he keeps the 2026 World Cup in his sights, a goal which today seems very distant.

Recently questioned at a press conference, Didier Deschamps was keen to provide his support to his former executive, while tempering expectations. “He is getting closer to the moment when he will become a player in football again. It will be an important step for him”confided the coach. But regarding a possible return to the French team, the tone became more reserved: “It will depend on him. That he wants it, I have no doubt. But he has steps to take. »

In an interview given to RMCthe former press chief of the Blues, Philippe Tournon, returned to a revealing episode in the management of Didier Deschamps. He explained that the coach had, on several occasions, chosen to exclude Pogba from press conferences, taking control of the choice of players to send to the media.

“No, don’t wear that one”

“I had complete freedom to do it (the choice of players to send to a press conference) with my first eight selectors. The ninth coach told me: “You tell me who you send”. It was Didier Deschamps »confided Philippe Tournon. “He would sometimes say to me: “No, don’t wear that one, he spoke a lot, we need to calm him down a little.” »he added.

And this has sometimes directly concerned the French environment:
“This is how Pogba, for almost a year, did not speak to the press. I never knew the why and the how. Whereas, when he returned to Russia, he was a hit”
Yet, “other players were not comfortable, while a guy like Paul Pogba was huge in a press conference”specified Philippe Tournon.
