Friday evening, Florian Thauvin scored a magnificent goal against Azerbaijan, on the seventh day of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup. His first achievement in the Rooster jersey since… June 11, 2019.

“I admit that I have stars in my eyes, I am like a child. Being able to put on this jersey was already important, to have these few minutes, to score, in front of my son. It’s the first time he’s seen me in the French team…”reacted the Racing Club de Lens player, very moved, after the French victory (3-0).

In eleven selections, Florian Thauvin has found the net twice. Six years and three months passed between these two goals. This is the longest interval for a French international since Didier Deschamps.

Thauvin and Deschamps, practically the same shortage

During his playing career, the latter scored four goals with the Blues. Between the third, scored on January 24, 1990 against East Germany, and the fourth scored on January 22, 1997 against Portugal, six years and eleven months had passed.

The French team will face Iceland on Monday for the eighth day of the qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup. It will validate its ticket for this competition if it wins in Reykjavik and, at the same time, Ukraine does not beat Azerbaijan in Krakow (Poland).
