In recent weeks, there has been a lot of speculation surrounding Real Madrid duo Xabi Alonso and Federico Valverde.

It was claimed they were at odds, following the latter's lack of interest in the right-back position, while Dani Carvajal and Trent Alexander-Arnold would play.

Valverde was not present during last week's Champions League win over Kairat Almaty, fueling these speculations. However, they were denied by himself, who was also started at right-back in the weekend's win over Villarreal, a result which saw Real Madrid return to the top of La Liga.

Alonso was full of praise for Valverde's performance against Villarreal.

Alonso was full of praise for Valverde's performance against Villarreal. The Uruguayan midfielder, absent from the national team for the international break, was questioned on Tuesday about his role as right back, to which he responded with humor, according to El Chiringuito (via Marca).

I am very happy. I really enjoyed it. It doesn't matter, it's part of football (to play other positions). »

Valverde could remain right-back for the moment

Valverde has been significantly more effective at right-back than Raul Asencio, who has played in that position occasionally in recent weeks. And there's a good chance he'll keep that position after the international break, given that Dani Carvajal and Trent Alexander-Arnold aren't expected to start until the Clasico, at the earliest.

This would mean Valverde could no longer play at right-back for the games against Getafe (Liga) and Juventus (Champions League), although he could be rested in one of those games ahead of the Barcelona clash.
