Four years of failures later, Barça retraces its steps. Launched in 2021 by the company A22 Sports Management, the Super League has still not seen the light of day. This closed championship project, supposed to compete with the current Champions League, reappeared from under the radar a few days ago after rumors concerning a probable reform of its operation.
Added to this information, immediately denied by UEFA, is a hard blow. That of the very probable withdrawal of FC Barcelona. The Catalans, among the main instigators of the project, are getting closer and closer to the European Football Clubs (EFC), formerly European Clubs Association (ECA), thus marking a break with the Super League. As a reminder, Barça was forced to leave the EFC after its positions in favor of this new competition.
This rapprochement hides another, that between Joan Laporta, president of the Blaugrana club, and Nasser Al-Khelaïfi, president of PSG but also and above all of the European club association, the EFC. Once enemies, the two men seem to have reconnected with the common goal of defending the interests of European football, far from the Super League.
Barça wants “a return to UEFA”
During an assembly held this Wednesday in Rome, the two leaders appeared together, hugs and smiles on their lips. A new friendship already confirmed on October 1, through a meal shared together on the sidelines of the meeting between FC Barcelona and PSG (1-2), and confirmed by a speech from Nasser Al-Khelaïfi, as relayed Mundo Deportivo.
“Today I welcome a special guest. Sometimes friends may disagree, that's normal, but they always come together for the common good. He has revitalized his club, both on the pitch, with a young and incredible team, and off it, with a magnificent new stadium. President of FC Barcelona, Joan Laporta, I ask you to join me in wishing you a safe return to the family”declared the Qatari leader, in response to that of Laporta the day before this meeting.
“As Barcelona, we are in favor of the pacification of European football. What we want is an agreement and a return to UEFA. »
