Barcelona and Real Madrid were the main remaining pressure groups in favor of the Superligue, a project aimed at reforming the Queen competition for European football and replacing the Champions League, the Europa League and the UEFA Conference League.

The Catalan giants would plan to leave the project after four and a half years.

According to Rac1, Barcelona would have decided not to be part of the superligue. The project started in April 2021 with 12 founding members, but following a virulent reaction, their number was reduced to three: Juventus, Real Madrid and Barcelona. The old lady has since left the Clasico duo to continue the project.

Barcelona favorable to UEFA changes

Barcelona's change of orientation seems to be motivated by UEFA. The European leadership body has changed the format of the Champions League and granted more funds to the “largest” competition teams, which is delighted by Barcelona. An improvement in relations between Barcelona and UEFA, illustrated by the exchanges between the presidents Joan Laporta and Aleksander Ceferin, was noted. Barcelona no longer sees the need to launch a new competition, and even if the European Court grants the right to the Superligue, this will not change its position.

The organizers of the superligue threatened with bankruptcy

This could take a hard blow to the Superligue, following the announcement of the risk of bankruptcy of the organizing company, A22. His CEO, Bernd Reichart, was the spokesman for the Superligue alongside Laporta and the president of Real Madrid, Florentino Perez, and presented the new format.

Real Madrid and Barcelona soon separated?
This could also mark the start of a wider split between Barcelona and Real Madrid. Last year, during the Merengues General Assembly, Perez called “the big clubs like Real Madrid and Barcelona to help each other”, their interests being aligned since the Superligue. Real Madrid also recently promised to punish Barcelona as much as possible as part of the Negreira case.
