Abidal underwent a liver transplant in 2012, after receiving a diagnosis of liver cancer in 2011 while he was playing for Barcelona. The former French international has since healed cancer, to our knowledge, and has not undergone any other operation. Abidal recovered the same season to play the Champions League final, won 3-1 against Manchester United in Wembley. Captain Carles Puyol gave him the armband and offered him the chance to lift the trophy after his convalescence.
