Almost a year after the controversy around the allocation of the trophy to Rodri, the relationship between France Football And the Madrid club still seems to be blocked, which could lead to a new absence from the Madrid delegation on September 22 at the Théâtre du Châtelet.
On October 28, 2024, the trophy had been awarded to Rodri, Manchester City midfielder. A choice that Madrid leaders have never digested, convinced that Vinicius deserved the Ballon d'Or. To express their anger, they had then decided to boycott the event at the very last minute: neither players, staff, nor club representatives had made the trip, even though Carlo Ancelotti had been elected best coach.
This year, Real Madrid could once again be the big absent from the ceremony. According to the Spanish daily
MarcaFrance Football, organizer of the Ballon d'Or, would have sent a delegation to Madrid in recent weeks to try to reconnect but the discussions have not succeeded.
No trophy for Real Madrid at the Ballon d'Or
This season, Real Madrid is however well represented: Kylian Mbappé, Vinicius and Jude Bellingham are in the running for the male Ballon d'Or. Thibault Courtois is one of the candidates for the Yachine Trophy, while Pablo Huijsen is appointed to the Kopa and Caroline Weir trophy in the female golden ball.
Despite these numerous appointments, no award should return to the club, especially since Real Madrid has won any title last season.
