The Liga will inaugurate a new approach to video refereeing for the 2025/26 season, with the aim of a more limited and targeted use of the Var. During the Girona-Rayo Vallecano match this Friday, the new rules will come into force: the Var will only intervene in the event of clear, obvious and manifest errors, leaving the final decision to the main referee according to Sport. The idea is to return to the initial spirit of the tool, considered as a safety tool and not as a systematic filter for each controversial action.
At the same time, the Spanish Federation (RFEF) and the CTA created the VAR-Pro, an organization bringing together 15 specialized referees which will officer exclusively in the first and second division. This dedicated team aims to standardize the intervention criteria, offer specific training and guarantee increased expertise. Their performances will be evaluated by Var analysts, and the selection of matches will also depend on their results, marking a real mini-revolution in Spanish arbitration. From now on, the followers of the Spanish championship are just waiting to see if this new device will hold its promises.
