By extending at Atlético, Antoine Griezmann was noted his new replacement status for the coming season. The fetish number 7 of “Cholo” Simeone is fixed.

A new life begins for Antoine Griezmann. The 2018 world champion, retired from the French team since September 2024, has certainly not terminated his contract at Atlético de Madrid, as he had the possibility this summer, in order to live his American dream. His departure for the MLS is postponed and for good reason, his wife gave birth to a fourth child and the small family “Grizi” therefore continues his life in the Spanish capital while waiting for a new life in the United States.

At 34, and despite a second part of the catastrophic season (three goals and as many decisive passes from February to the Club World Cup), Griezmann decided to extend until 2027 with the Colchoneros. He certainly accepted the drop in salary requested by his leaders, but the plan is always to conclude the love story next year. He will go in legend, him the top scorer in the history of the Madrid club, even if he has never been champion.

On the other hand, Antoine Griezmann accepted a lining role for his very last season under the orders of Diego Simeone. Atlético is determined to launch a new dynamic and has achieved XXL recruitment at 150 million euros. “El Cholo” has written the history of the club but he is still responsible for relaunching the machine, in particular by really playing the title of champion of Spain against Real and Barça. The last seasons are disappointing.

Griezmann's successors in action

Thus, Griezmann has not worked within the team of holders in recent days and Simeone actually begins without the native of Mâcon for the first preparation match against FC Porto, this Sunday evening (9 p.m.), at the Estadio Do Dragao. The Argentinian coach left for a 4-3-3 during the training week and aligns his son Giuliano Simeone well on the right wing and Julian Alvarez in left-argument alongside Alexander Sorho. Alexa Baena, recruited for 42 million euros in Villarreal, is now responsible for creating the danger starting from the midfielder.

Opposite, the Portuans, who also played the Club World Cup in the United States, played their last preparation match before a recovery in Portuguese Liga against the Vitoria de Guimaraes, next Saturday. The recruits Jan Bednarek, Nehuen Perez, Alberto Costa, Victor Froholdt and Borja Sainz are lined up by Francesco Farioli. The club chaired by André Villas-Boas took the opportunity to present his new recruit, the Luuk de Jong scorer, 34!
