From superstar to Manchester City under Pep Guardiola to ghost in a loan in Arsenal, Raheem Sterling sees his career taking a bad turning point. He is not one of the plans of the Italian coach, Enzo Maresca, in Chelsea. At 30, the English international (77 selections) is pushed towards the exit. This summer transfer window could mark a real turn for him: that of an exodus outside the Premier League, which has never happened before. Landed in Chelsea in 2022 against 55 million euros, Sterling was to embody the experience in a club in full reconstruction. Two seasons later, the observation is brutal: 81 games, 19 goals, and a status never consolidated. The player trained in Liverpool, brilliant at Manchester City (131 goals in 339 games), has never found his place in the ranks of the blues.
The latest stage of his descent into hell? A ghostly loan in Arsenal, where he only scored one small goal in 28 games played in all competitions. However, it must be admitted that he was unlucky, the bad news has accumulated for him in recent seasons: Sterling was injured on the back in the 2023-2024 season when he was still playing in Chelsea, then he suffered a knee injury this year in Arsenal. Last December, you were already told that his situation at Arsenal was at the nightmare. Indeed, he had hardly played before 2025. The Gunners of Mikel Arteta never counted on him, and obviously do not count it to buy it this summer. Result: a return to Chelsea, but without a future in London. According to the newspaper The SunRaheem Sterling has been training for a week with João Felix, Axel Disasi, Ben Chilwell, all on the start. But for the moment, there has been no discussion between the player and the club about a transfer. However, the two parties remain serene as to the possibility of finding an agreement.
Enzo Maresca does not want him
Enzo Maresca, who arrived in 2024, was clear last summer: “He trains separately. As I said, the situation is quite clear and there is no update. It is not possible to give him minutes of play. Those who want minutes, it is better that they leave. ” It is therefore very clear. The player is no longer in the rotation scheduled for the 2025-2026 season, and Chelsea is actively looking for an exit door. The problem ? She struggles to present herself. Even Saudi Arabia, often on the lookout for this type of profile, has not expressed interest. Estimated today at 25 million euros, Sterling could leave for much less in order to lighten the payroll. But the lack of serious offers complicates everything, and Chelsea ends up with an experienced player, but become bulky. At this point, one might think that Juventus is the most likely club to relaunch English. In search of a left winger since the start of this transfer window, the old lady is currently making Jadon Sancho her priority. But in the event of failure, the sterling option could well activate.
Its profile sticks with the more vertical philosophy that Igor Tudor wishes to set up. But for the moment, neither Juventus, nor any Serie A club, has shown its interest in the former of Man City. Another possibility could be offered to him: Atlético de Madrid, which is looking for offensive reinforcements. The name of Ademola Lookman circulates, but the Nigerian international is closer to Inter Milan. In the event of failure on this track, Sterling could become a credible alternative, in view of its experience and its price, deemed quite low. Formerly a framework of Three Lions, Sterling has completely disappeared from Thomas Tuchel's plans, overwhelmed in the hierarchy by players like Madueke, Gordon or Eze. The Premier League no longer seems to want him. And this is perhaps where the key resides: at 30, Sterling must certainly be reinvented outside England. A new championship, a new environment, a last chance to relaunch a career that slowly slides towards anonymity.
