La Liga plans to organize a championship match in the middle of season in the United States, with FC Barcelona as the main protagonist. Javier Tebas, president of La Liga, confirmed his intention to have a meeting play in the city of Miami, in order to continue the internationalization of the competition. After aborted attempts the previous seasons, especially with meetings like Gérone-Barça or Barça-Atlético, Tebas now privileges a duel involving Barça in front of another major team, due to more favorable relations. Real Madrid is, for the moment, excluded from this project due to tensions between its president Florentino Pérez and Tebas according to ESPN.
The planned idea would be to organize the match between FC Barcelona and Villarreal on the 17th day of Liga, scheduled for December 20 and 21, 2025, with Villarreal as a local team. This period corresponds to a window without European competitions, facilitating logistics for the movements of the two clubs. If this first test in Miami turns out to be conclusive, the Liga could repeat the experience to strengthen the visibility of the Spanish championship in the United States. However, the project is still in the initial phase and no final decision has yet been made.
