Real Madrid has made great recruits this summer, but Xabi Alonso's workforce should also experience significant departures.

The departure of Luka Modric is confirmed, followed by that of Lucas Vazquez; The two players will not see their contracts renewed. Rodrygo Goes is also strongly expected for a departure, and David Alaba could also be transferred.

Alaba was an indisputable holder of Real Madrid until December 2023, but an injury to the previous cross ligaments considerably reduced his notoriety. Since his return, he has struggled to find his level of yesteryear.

Next season Alaba will be the fifth central defender of Real Madrid, behind Dean Huijsen, Antonio Rudiger, Eder Militao and Raul Asencio. One could even consider that Aurélien Tchouameri is ahead of the hierarchy, the midfielder having been used in defense by Alonso during the Club World Cup.

David Alaba towards the departure

Real Madrid hopes for the departure of David Alaba this summer

It is almost certain that Alaba will not extend his contract with Real Madrid, which would imply a departure in 2026. However, according to Diario As, the club would prefer a departure this summer to save his salary, even if he recognizes that the interest will be insufficient because of his high salary and his lack of visibility due to injuries.

Real Madrid has already tried to find an amicable solution for Alaba, but without success. It is unlikely that the 33-year-old will force a start, because he is an indisputable holder for Austria, which would still be the case even if he practically did not play for the Merengues during the 2025-26 season.

It is logical that Alaba was transferred this summer, but if Alonso had to deploy training to three defenders permanently, it would be necessary as a depth option. It would therefore be very surprising to see him go in 2025.
