Paris Basketball, created in 2018, is indeed the first Parisian club to win the French basketball championship since PSG Racing in 1997. And before, it was necessary to go back to 1963 and to the coronation of the PUC against the neighbors of Alsace Bagnolet.
But if this coronation of Paris basketball is historic, it is also because of the titles of champion won by PSG in Ligue 1 (football) and in Starligue (handball). It is indeed only the second time that a city has made such a hat -trick in France. There are ten, Paris had already been in the spotlight thanks to the coronations of PSG in football and in hand and that of the French Stadium in TOP14.
Paris, a unique case
In 2016, Racing 92 succeeded the French stadium while PSG saw double again by being crowned French champion in football and handball, but the sky and white are no longer based in Paris but in the Hauts-de-Seine. Paris had therefore had to be satisfied with yet another double.
Basketball and volleyball (1945, 1953, 1963), Basketball and Hand (1954), Hand and Volley (1962, 1974), Rugby and Volley (1998, 2000, 2003, 2007) as well as football and hand (2013, 2016, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2022, 2023) doubled.
Only four other cities have succeeded in such doubles in the history of French collective sports: Montpellier twice, Marseille, Lyon and… Saint-Maur.
Finally, note that Paris is the only city in France to be able to boast of having won a title of champion of France in the five main group sports (football, rugby, handball, basketball and volleyball). Montpellier follows with four out of five titles, only the missing basketball at its hunting board.
