Harfish timid beginnings with Manchester City

Rayan Cherki was quick to be talked about. For his first steps with Manchester City, the young French international was established by Pep Guardiola against Wydad Casablanca (2-0), at the opening of the Club World Cup. A surprise? Not that much. The Catalan technician wanted to offer rhythm to his recruit and test his automatisms. From the second minute, the former Lyonnais caused the right side before his center led to the goal of Foden's goal. A dream start … on paper.

Cherki, technical lightnings but a lack of consistency

Roulette-Talon, discrepancies, back centers: Cherki wanted to make an impression. He has often sought Foden (37th) and Doku (45th), alternating short game and more daring initiatives. But everything was not perfect. A dangerous loss of the 13th ball almost cost his team dearly, while other choices in transition lacked lucidity. Overall, its statistics remain encouraging (89 % of successful passes, 4 dribbles out of 5) but do not yet compensate for a manifest irregularity in the decisive zone.

In the 59th minute, Pep Guardiola decided to replace him with Haaland. More than just a change, it was a message: the Catalan coach wants to spare his young player. City was already leading 2-0, and Cherki had shown envy. Not enough to burn the steps. Guardiola seems to be aware that the integration of number 29 will take time, and that it will be necessary to supervise his dazzling. Giving him the keys too early would be a risky bet, as the margin of progression remains large.

Serious city, limited wydad

Beyond the Cherki case, Manchester City managed his meeting with authority. Foden and Doku, scorers, confirmed their sparkling form. Opposite, the Wydad tried to answer but sorely lacked realism. Ederson had to intervene on several occasions, notably after a loss of Cherki's bullet, but the technical gap between the two teams has widened over the minutes. With this victory, the Citizens will face Al-Ain next Monday with an intact serenity.

The Cherki case remains a matter to follow. Its talent is there, undeniable, but its hybrid positioning and its choices in transition must still be refined. To impose itself in City, it will need more consistency, and above all a better management of weak times. Guardiola, faithful to his method, will take his time. The first steps are taken. It remains to be built on this basis to exist within the Mancunian orchestra.
