Makelélé finally explains why he left Real

The transfer of Claude Makelele from Real Madrid to Chelsea in the summer of 2003, had surprised the world of football. At the time, the French midfielder had just chained the full seasons in the Merengue jersey, largely contributing to the balance of the “galactic” Madrid team. However, his departure had aroused as much misunderstanding among Madrid supporters as well as satisfaction among the Blues. It is today, many years later, that Makelele finally decides to tell behind the scenes of his departure. At the bend of an interview with the daily AS, the former French international confides that his arrival in Chelsea was not the result of chance. “Generally, you never leave Real Madrid because it is the biggest club in the world. But the opportunity arose at me because Roman Abramovich fought to have me in Chelsea ”, he reveals.

Makélélé details the Russian owner's persuasion force, just landed at the head of the London club. “Yes, I spoke with him. He convinced me, just like Claudio Ranieri. He insisted tirelessly, I felt that the club was fighting for me ”he recalls. The Frenchman admits that he really felt desired at Stamford Bridge, a feeling that has clearly weighed in his final decision. In Madrid, recognition was no longer there, despite its performance.

Why Makelele turned his back on Real

It is Chelsea's assertive will to bet on Makelele 100 % that tipped the scales. “That's why I decided to come to Chelsea: they wanted me, they wanted me 100 %. When I arrived, I gave everything for the club. »» An attachment and a confidence found which allowed him to fully flourish in this new challenge.

In Chelsea, Claude Makelele participated in the transformation of the club, establishing itself as one of the best defensive environments in Premier League.
