Faced with the scary prospect of a third absence consecutive to the World Cup, the future of Italy coach Luciano Spalletti is darkening.

A year from the next World Cup, the concern grows around the Italian selection. After already missing the last two editions in Russia (2018) and Qatar (2022), the heavy defeat (0-3) against Norway on Friday, in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, revives the specter of a new disillusionment.

This underperformance seriously weakens the position of Luciano Spalletti. And according to Sky Sportthe Italian coach is now on the hot seat.

The short-list of Italy to replace Spalletti

The media reports that a decisive interview is scheduled for Tuesday between Spalletti and Gabriele Gravina, the president of the Italian football federation (FIGC). The former Naples coach could then choose to throw in the towel, especially in the event of a new misstep against Moldova on Monday. He could thus withdraw if he considers that he can no longer carry out his mission at the head of the Nazional.

Anticipating this possibility, the leaders of the FIGC already explore avenues for its succession. Four names stand out, Stefano Pioli, currently in Al-Nassr, and Claudio Ranieri, recently retired after his visit to AS Rome. But also, Daniele de Rossi, free since his departure from the Louve club in September 2024, and Fabio Cannavaro, ex-manager of Dinamo Zagreb.
