With its transfer to € 50 million, Aït-Nouri enters directly into the closed circle of the most expensive African stars in the history of football.

The transfer of Rayan Aït-Nouri to Manchester City against a check estimated at 50 million euros marks a new stage in the career of the Algerian left side. Arrived discreetly in Wolverhampton in 2020, the former Angevin now offers a place in the European elite and also in history. Because with this amount, it enters directly into the top 10 of the most expensive African players of all time. Better yet: he shares 7th place ex aequo with Thomas Partey, André Onana and Sébastien Haller, all sold for the same sum.

This ranking, dominated by Victor Osimhen (80-81 million €), shows how the talents of the African continent have established themselves as precious assets on the world market. If the majority of the most expensive transfers concern attackers, the emergence of a side in this hierarchy is not trivial.

A hierarchy dominated by offensive … but not only

At the forefront of this record, there are well -known names: Nicolas Pépé, Achraf Hakimi, Riyad Mahrez, Aubameyang, or Naby Keïta. All share a common point: an ability to differentiate in offensive areas. However, more defensive profiles manage to get out of the game, like Aït-Nouri, Hakimi or goalkeeper André Onana.

This diversification illustrates an evolution of the market: clubs no longer hesitate to invest massively on defensive profiles, provided that they offer real technical guarantees and a projection of the future.

Salah remains in the top 10 most expensive African players in history.

The Premier League, a great consumer of African talents

The other striking trend is English domination in record African transfers. Of the 15 most expensive transactions, the majority implies a Premier League club as a buyer. Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester City, Chelsea… All have made Africa a strategic pool.

This colossal purchasing power is at the origin of the prices. And Aït-Nouri's trajectory is part of this logic: young, talented, and already experienced in the requirements of the English championship, he embodies the perfect profile for the Cadors of the Kingdom.

An increasing valuation of African talents

Since the 2010s, the value of African players has continued to climb. This phenomenon is explained as much by their club performance as by their growing international impact. The case of Aït-Nouri is all the more symbolic as it intervenes at a position often undervalued on the market.

By joining the gratin of African transfers, he confirms that the new generation – technical, disciplined and more exposed in the media – is redrawing the contours of the world market.
