Araujo firmly denied rumors announcing it, affirming its intention to stay with the Champions of Liga. The defender is under contract until 2031, but rumors reported a release clause in his contract which could have allowed him to leave earlier than expected during the summer transfer window for around 65 million euros (54.5 million pounds Sterling/74 million dollars). However, the Uruguayan defender clearly indicated that Barcelona remained his hometown.
Addressing journalists, Araujo said: ” I am satisfied with all the titles won this season. Personally, I do not think it was an excellent season, especially because of the injury that kept me away from the field for a long time, but I am happy because I have three titles to my credit and I am happy to be here. I assure you of my continuity, I have a contract until 2031. ”
The 2024-25 season was far from ideal for Araujo, who suffered from form problems following a surgical operation after COPA America. His long absence of the land saw other players to put himself forward, in particular Pau Cubarsi and Iñigo Martinez, who have often taken his place as holders. Despite his convalescence and his return to competition, Araujo has never fully found the imposing form which he showed at the heart of the Barcelona defense. His performances were criticized, in particular after the elimination of the club in the Champions League against Inter, where he was perceived as underperforming.
Ronald Araujo wants to stay at Barça
“I am very mature and aware of my abilities,” he told journalists. “I was very serene. I am in a good mood and physically too. If I am in good health, I can compete with anyone. I do not listen to criticism. Maybe my family listens to them a little more, but I don't pay attention to what people say. »»
Ronald Araujo, clarifying
“Being absent so long bother me a little. I always want to play. When you don't play, you may lose a little self-confidence, but it's part of the career. I play in one of the best clubs in the world. I am one of the captains of the team. I still have many years and beautiful things to come. The coach loves me, and the supporters too.
Araujo will have to face a tough competition for playing time next season. Alongside Cubarsi and Martinez, Uruguayan will also have to compete with Eric Garcia and Andreas Christensen for a place in the defense of Hansi Flick. Although Barcelona is apparently open to the sale of Christensen, the Danish international has not expressed the slightest intention of leaving.
