Kylian Mbappé did not miss his last appearance of the season in Liga. On the lawn of Bernabeu, the Real Madrid striker offered a final demonstration of his talent. Its double allowed Casa Blanca to win 2-0 against Real Sociedad, but also to pay a last tribute to two monuments of the club: Carlo Ancelotti and Luka Modric, honored for their final championship match with Real. The Bondynois ends the season with 31 goals on the clock.
Thanks to its 31 achievements and coefficient 2 awarded to La Liga in the European Golden Soulier scale, Mbappé totals 62 points. He thus exceeds Viktor Gyökeres (59 points), who completed his season at Sporting Portugal with 39 goals. A final suspense remains, however: Mohamed Salah (56 points) could still be ahead of it if it registers a hat -trick – or even a quadrupled – facing Crystal Palace. An unlikely hypothesis, as Egyptian has been losing speed for several weeks.
A rare trophy for a French player
If the trend is confirmed, Kylian Mbappé will only become the second Frenchman to be crowned with European gold, after Thierry Henry in 2004 and 2005. He would also succeed Cristiano Ronaldo, last player from Real Madrid to have won this individual award (2015). The Mexican Hugo Sánchez had also succeeded in this feat with the Castilian jersey on the back (1990).
Mbappé exceeds Gyökeres and goes to the golden shoe
With these 31 goals, Mbappé also established a record: a player had never scored so much for his first season at Real Madrid. He thus erases Ivan Zamorano and his 28 achievements during the 1992-1993 exercise. Over the last five games, he scored 9 goals, ending the season on an infernal pace. A regularity that impresses, even if the criticisms of the collective impact of French persist.
Mbappé, towards a stimulus in the Golden Ball race?
If the 2024/2025 campaign ended without a major title, Mbappé could see this golden shoe revive its chances in the Golden Ball race. Especially if Real shines during the Club World Cup in June. In the meantime, this individual performance punctuates a first successful Madrid year on a personal level. The future will say if it will mark the start of a new reign.
