With 21 goals scored in 34 Ligue 1 games, Mason Greenwood saved OM from Roberto de Zerbi many times this season with a violent strike from the left or the right (left, he executes the penalties of his bad foot). The English crack, however, does not better than Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, 30 goals in 51 matches last season, or Florian Thauvin, author of a crazy season at 26 goals in 54 games in 2017-2018.
Rudi Garcia's right to the Marseille training right winger, “Flotov” had caused a sensation of many actions to compensate for the lack of talent to the finishing of other workforce, Valère Germain, Kostas Mitroglou as well as Clinton Njie. The Phocaeans of course reached the final of the Europa League (2-0 defeat against Atlético d'Antoine Griezmann), missing the podium in Ligue 1 in the last straight line.
That season in Ligue 1, Thauvin had struck hard by finishing second top scorer behind Edinson Cavani (22 goals against 28) and by ahead of Memphis Depay, Neymar, Radamel Falcao or Mario Balotelli. The current Udinese captain is no longer the last OM player to finish top 2 in the scorer ranking.
Greenwood erases Thauvin
Seven years later, Greenwood therefore succeeds Thauvin by finishing “officially” second top scorer of the season with Teral with Ousmane Dembélé, appointed top scorer of the season by the LFP because of his number of less important penalty goals (2 “pénos” against 6 for English). The last top scorer in Ligue 1 evolving in Marseille therefore officially remains Mamadou Niang, with his 18 goals during the champion title in 2010.
That said, if the LFP decreases equalities at the top of the ranking of the best scorers in recent years, the history of the French championship has given some striking equality. In 1994, Youri Djorkaeff, Roger Boli and Nicolas Ouédec had finished first with 20 achievements and the LNF had not appointed top “official” scorer.
