Mbappé is indeed shone at Real Madrid, marking his first season with a brilliant hat-trick against Barcelona this weekend, despite a defeat. The three goals of the Frenchman on Sunday allowed him to get ahead of Lewandowski in the Pichichi race (top scorer in La Liga), the Polish international being still looking for the goal that would allow him to cross the 100 goals with the Catalans.
Lewandowski currently has 25 league goals in 31 appearances. However, he has not found the net in the Spanish first division since March 30, when he had scored a double during a overwhelming 4-1 victory at home against Girona.
Robert Lewandowski and Kylian Mbappé, the fight continues
The fact that he missed five games due to a muscle injury contracted against Celta Vigo last month did not help things. His last goal for Barcelona, all competitions combined, dates back more than a month, during the quarter -final first leg of the Champions League against Borussia Dortmund. The Pole is still looking forward to scoring his 100th goal for the Blaugrana.
Mbappé took ahead
The triplet of Mbappé during the 4-3 defeat of Real Madrid against Barça allowed him to reach 27 goals in Liga, two more than Lewandowski. The 26 -year -old also broke a historic record for the Merengues. The French international now holds the record for the greatest number of goals scored by a Real Madrid player in his first season, with 39 goals to his credit, thus breaking the previous record held by the legendary Ivan Zamorano. The Chilean had scored 37 goals in 45 games in his first season (1992-93).
While the men of Hansi Flick almost assured their title of Spanish champion after their victory against Real Madrid, bringing their advance at the top of the seven points to only three days from the end, it will be interesting to see if Mbappé will manage to win the Pichichi Prize in its first season, or if Lewandowski's experience will take over in the last games. Madrid will face Mallorca on Wednesday, May 14, while Barça will go to his local rival, Espanyol, Thursday, May 15.
