The end of an era. Éric Di Meco, one of the most emblematic voices of French football, said goodbye to his role as a commentator. Passed by Bein Sports then on RMC Sport, he decided to bow to this job which he however appreciated. The 1993 European Champion had established himself as one of the essential figures of football in France, with his analyzes and his tone often appreciated by viewers.
Today, the former defender of Olympique de Marseille is content to intervene in programs like Rothen ignites and the Super Moscato Show, but from a distance from home. And it is not only because RMC has almost no rights to put in the tooth. In an interview with the team for the documentary “with lost body”, broadcast on May 20, he reveals that his physical condition is the reason.
“It was my physique who said to stop me at some point. In reality, it is an extraordinary job. Except that at one point, I realized that in this job, we walked a lot. Movements, plane, airport, you walk, you walk, you walk … “he explains. These incessant journeys have become more and more difficult for Di Meco for whom the simple fact of having to cross the stadium in order to access the gallery became a test.
“It makes me unhappy”
The former Marseille defender did not want his lack of pleasure to feel on the antenna. “In the end, I didn't want us to feel like I was less likely to be there. Because everything that brought me to the stadium was a torture in reality ”he said. A difficult decision, but motivated by physical reasons which forced him to move away from the fields permanently.
At the same time, Di Meco spoke more about his physical problems. “It is at the limit of motor handicap. I am taking anti-inflammatory drugs “he confesses. “I have a grandson, so he's very small, but in not long he will start to want to play football where he will start running. If he runs too fast towards the road or towards the pool, I wonder if I am able to catch up with him and that makes me unhappy. There, I say to myself: 'you have become disabled' “he adds.
