Jean Tigana is obviously a legend of French football. He was the invaluable defensive midfielder of Michel Platini's Blues, during the “Seville nightmare” in the 1982 World Cup semi-finals against Germany (3-3, 4-5 TAB), during the coronation at Euro 1984 at the Parc des Princes then at the 1986 World Cup in Mexico with a third place in the key. He only scored one goal in 52 international matches.
The native of Bamako, who grew up in Marseille, also had a very great career in club. He was champion of France three times with the Girondins de Bordeaux then twice with OM! Tigana also played three semi-finals of Champion Clubs Cup (the former name of the Champions League).
“Jano” Tigana was eliminated with the Bordeaux by Juventus in the 1984-1985 season (3-0 defeat and 2-0 victory), then with the Phocaeans in 1990 against Benfica (2-1 victory, 1-0 defeat with the famous “Vata hand”) before beating the Spartak Moscow in 1991 (Victories 1-3 and 2-1). The Marseille club then lost on penalties against the Belgrade red Star in the final in Bari.
Tigana tied with Mbappé
Tigana shared a small record with Kylian Mbappé and Marquinhos, having played six matches in the semi-finals of the C1 with a French club, but Marquinhos is now the only record-department.
The Brazilian Captain of PSG is now at 7 games in the LDC semi-finals with the Red and Blue since the meeting against Arsenal on Wednesday evening. Marquinhos played his fourth semi-final of the Champions League with the Paris club, after the qualification against Leipzig in 2020 (in a single match) then the eliminations against Manchester City in 2021 and Borussia Dortmund in 2024.
