Faced with the controversy, the Sky Sports consultant made a point of clarifying his words and making his mea culpa this Tuesday:
“I have very clear opinions, I love the debate and it will never change. However, I would not want to be described as an ignorant or disrespectful consultant, whether for a player, a club, a country, a continent, a continental tournament, anything. What I would say is that where I was wrong, is that I clumsily described the CAN as not being a major tournament ”he confessed.
“I was trying to explain what could help Mo Salah to win the Ballon d'Or, and I wanted to explain that the CAN, like the Gold Cup and the Asian games (Asian Cup, Editor's note), may have less echo with people who vote for the Ballon d'Or. But they remain major tournaments. It was certainly not my goal to offend anyone. I hope that we understood my words and that no one feels offended yet ”concluded the native of Bootle.
