Released by his body and psychologically worn, Raphaël Varane decided to end his career last September at the age of 31. He had attempted a last challenge with Como last summer after three seasons spent on the side of Manchester United. Three seasons that have not always been easy to live for the 2018 world champion.
During an interview with The Athleticthe ex-defenseman notably mentioned the particular management of Erik Ten Hag. He accused the Dutch coach, dismissed last October and replaced by Ruben Amorim, of being excessive authoritarianism and establishing fear in players.
Varane: “We had cold relationships with him”
“” I was surprised that it was extended. The link with the group no longer existed, entrusted Varane. It's hard to find the right words. It was very tense at times. Sometimes he made the effort to listen to the feedback from the players. Sometimes he made decisions without listening to the feelings of the players. So there were ups and downs. The former Captain of the Blues then returned to a stormy discussion with Ten Hag. “” We had a lively discussion. We said to ourselves certain truths, but then I did not play for almost two months, he revealed. I said that I did not agree with certain ways to do concerning the relationship between him and the team. I felt forced to tell him because some players were not at all satisfied.
