Marseille receives Saint-Etienne at the Vélodrome this Saturday with the ambition to consolidate its place on the Ligue 1 podium and to continue its beautiful dynamic in February.

OM wants to chain and mark the story

Second in the championship, the Roberto de Zerbi OM found colors after a complicated month of January. Winners against Lyon and Angers, the Phocaeans are now well installed in the Champions League race, even if catching PSG seems utopian. A victory against the Greens would allow them to chain two consecutive successes at home for the first time this season, but also to sign a fifth success of rank against ASSE, a first in the history of this classic. The Vélodrome stadium, the scene of many Marseille exploits, saw OM triumph during 75 % of the 57 confrontations against Saint-Etienne, an impressive figure which underlines the importance of this enclosure. De Zerbi, already winner twice this season against the Greens (6-0 accumulated in the league and in the cup), wants to continue on this momentum and offer supporters a 1200th victory in Ligue 1, a symbolic CAP.

Saint-Etienne in the turmoil

For ASSE, the dynamics are quite different. After a promising start under the leadership of Eirik Horneland, the Greens sank in February with two consecutive defeats against Lille and Rennes. Now 16th and three points from Nantes, the first non-relief, the Stéphanois must imperatively react to avoid getting bogged down in the red zone. The observation is alarming: no victory during the last 11 trips in Ligue 1 and 45 goals collected in 21 games, a statistic that had not been affected for more than 70 years. With a complicated calendar, this trip to the Vélodrome promises to be perilous for a team in lack of confidence and solidity.

Marseille, with its historical superiority and its current form, seems to have all the cards in hand. But Saint-Etienne, back to the wall, could try to surprise. A shock with multiple issues, between a team in search of European glory and another in fighting for its survival.
