There was a certain fear among Monegasque supporters before the start of the match between AS Monaco and Aston Villa on Tuesday at the Louis II stadium. While their team remained on two straight defeats in the competition, ASM fans were able to rejoice in their team's success against the Villans, as part of the seventh day of the league phase of the Champions League (1-0). A success synonymous with play-offs for the eighth, at least, for the rest of the competition.
A success all the more important as the last meeting of this first European phase scheduled for January 29 will be played against an ogre: Inter Milan. The objective was therefore clear for Adi Hütter's men this Tuesday: to win. And the latter did not waste time to please their coach since they opened the scoring in the eighth minute of play, Wilfried Singo scoring on a corner kick (1-0).
No pressure against Inter Milan
The visitors will then try to come back and obtain some serious opportunities, without ever managing to convert one. On the Monegasque side, the break could also have been made two or three times, but again without result. The 61% ball possession in favor of Aston Villa throughout the game shows that it was Unai Emery's protégés who made the play. On the other hand, the number of shots and chances was practically the even between the two formations.
The final victory by the smallest of gaps (1-0) therefore allows the Rocher team to be certain of continuing in the competition, whatever its result in Milan in a week. In the (very) provisional ranking, Monaco is ninth, Aston Villa seventh, with the same number of points.
