The affair between Sébastien Tarrago and Olympique de Marseille continues to cause a lot of ink to flow. After his controversial remarks against Pablo Longoria on Sunday evening on L'Équipe du Soir, the journalist finds himself at the heart of a heated debate. And if Tarrago's criticisms had already caused a stir, a new response seems to have reignited the controversy this Monday.
The situation is getting worse and OM, which was quick to react, is preparing a muscular response to defend its president. What exactly is it about? And where is this media quarrel which now goes beyond the simple framework of football?
A battle between Tarrago and OM
In a press release published this Monday, OM announced legal measures against Sébastien Tarrago. The club considers the terms used by the journalist to be unacceptable and believes that they are detrimental to its president, its leaders and, more broadly, to the Marseille institution. “No excuse can erase the violence of these words,” states the press release. OM therefore promises to take legal action and claim damages, in response to what it describes as a gratuitous and harmful attack.
It is in this tense context that the Olympian management has chosen not to let anything go, particularly in the face of a season marked by numerous refereeing controversies and internal tensions.
Longoria is going through a real zone of turbulence.
An already explosive climate around Longoria
This media release comes at a particularly delicate period for Pablo Longoria, already under fire after the numerous complaints made by OM against the arbitration. During the draw against Strasbourg (1-1) on Sunday evening, Longoria denounced what he considers to be an accumulation of injustices against his club, a speech which is starting to annoy some observers.
On the set of Rothen ignites, the former OM player, Éric Di Meco, called for more moderation. According to him, Marseille leaders should adopt a more measured strategy to avoid alienating referees and the media. However, others, like Samir Nasri, defended Longoria, believing that OM was right to denounce the injustices suffered. “The penalty not whistled against Lille is incomprehensible”, declared the former French international.
A case far from closed
The dispute between Sébastien Tarrago and OM takes a legal turn, adding a new layer of tension to an already turbulent season. It remains to be seen whether this confrontational strategy will strengthen Longoria's authority or prove, as some fear, counterproductive.
OM have clearly chosen to go to the front. One thing is certain: the controversy is far from over.
