In the Premier League, even midweek matches do not lack spice and suspense. The Gtech Community Stadium was the scene of a spectacular turnaround between Brentford and Manchester City (2-2). The Skyblues, although in control with a two-goal lead in the 78th minute, let a precious victory slip away against the intrepid Bees.
Foden shines but City lack consistency
However, the match seemed to turn in favor of Pep Guardiola’s men. Phil Foden, in great form, opened the scoring in the 66th minute by subtly taking in a perfect cross from Kevin De Bruyne. Ten minutes later, the Englishman doubled the lead by being the quickest to react after a shot saved by Savinho. City then seemed to be heading towards a third consecutive victory in the Premier League.
Wissa and Norgaard, the heroes of Brentford
But that was without counting on the resilience of Thomas Frank’s men. Yoane Wissa, taking advantage of a hesitant Mancunian defense, reduced the gap from close range in the 78th minute, at the same time becoming his team’s top scorer in the league ahead of Ivan Toney. Galvanized, Brentford pushed and found the equalizer in added time. Christian Norgaard, exemplary captain, exploded the stadium with a powerful header in the 92nd minute.
A cruel scenario for City
The scenario could have been even crueler for City, but Nathan Aké saved his team by clearing a curled attempt from Bryan Mbeumo on the line in the 95th minute. This result leaves a bitter taste for the reigning champions, now with just one win in nine Premier League matches in November and December. A statistic which seriously tarnishes their ambitions to retain their crown, despite recent victories against Leicester and West Ham, and a resounding success in the FA Cup (8-0 against Salford City). Brentford, for their part, confirms that they are a real pain in the ass for the big names in the championship.
City let two valuable points slip away in the title race, a scenario Guardiola and his men could bitterly regret come May.
