The arrival of Matvey Safonov at Paris Saint-Germain last summer from FK Krasnodar aimed to redistribute the cards for the goalkeeper position. And in fact, if Gianluigi Donnarumma remains favored by Luis Enrique, the Parisian coach, the latter does not hesitate to call on the Russian international when he deems it necessary.

This was particularly the case for the clash against Bayern Munich (0-1) in the Champions League, where Safonov was chosen to start in the Parisian goals. He also took over after Donnarumma’s injury against AS Monaco (2-1) in Ligue 1, before returning the cover in the following match, against Lens in the 32nd finals of the Coupe de France. The former Byki goalkeeper notably distinguished himself with two decisive saves during the penalty shootout (1-1, 3-4 tab).

Donnarumma is confident

Back for the Champions Trophy against ASM (1-0), Donnarumma followed up with a start against AS Saint-Étienne (2-1) this Sunday, in the championship. In the mixed zone, the captain of Squadra Azzurra spoke about the competition between him and Safonov. A situation which does not seem to negatively affect the Neapolitan.

“I feel very good, I play with peace of mind. In each match, the coach decides and that’s the truth. Before the match, we look at who is playing but I play calmly. I feel very good and it’s the coach who decides”he declared in the mixed zone.
