Despite a nice goal from Kylian Mbappé in the fifth minute of the match, the final of the Spanish Super Cup between Real Madrid and FC Barcelona largely turned in favor of the Blaugranas on Sunday in Saudi Arabia. The Whites won the European Super Cup and the Intercontinental Cup this season, and Mbappé scored his first goal in a Clasico, but the trophy this time went to the Blaugranas. The Barcelonans, much better on the pitch, won 5-2, three months after their 4-0 success at the Bernabéu in La Liga.
This Clasico relocated to Jeddah was incredible for an hour of play. It was Lamine Yamal who equalized for FCB, after getting around Aurélien Tchouameni (22nd). The French internationals of this Real-Barça were essential. Eduardo Camavinga cut down Gavi for the 2-1 penalty transformed by Robert Lewandowski (39th). Then Raphinha, on an opening from Jules Koundé, scored with a superb header (39th). At the end of added time in the first period, Alejandro Balde rushed to score the 4-1 goal for the Catalans (45th + 10).
Barça at 10
The match took yet another turn at the hour mark. Returning from the locker room, Raphinha overtook Tchouameni to score his double (48th). 5-1. Then Wojciech Szczesny, not very convincing in the Blaugrana goals, mowed down Mbappé in front of his area and took red (56th). On the full-axis free kick, Rodrygo sent a huge strike into the back of Iñaki Peña’s net (60th). At 11 against 10, the Madrilenians pushed without ever igniting the end of the match.
The two big names of Spanish football return to the league next weekend. Real, who are now ahead of Atlético at the top of the standings, host Las Palmas on Sunday, while Barça, five points behind Casa Blanca, will travel to the capital to challenge Getafe on Saturday.
