While Didier Deschamps has formalized his departure from the France team after the 2026 World Cup, this announcement, presented as a simple formality, hides a surprising detail. Indeed, the former coach did not consider it useful to inform his captain, Kylian Mbappé, before making this public declaration. This silence from DD towards its leader raises questions about the nature of their relationship, already marked by tensions for several months.

Deschamps does a nasty blow to Mbappé

According to information revealed by Le Parisien, Deschamps chose to announce his withdrawal on the 1 p.m. news on TF1, without first informing Kylian Mbappé or the other executives of the Blues. A decision which surprised, including members of the staff and those close to the coach.

For Didier Deschamps, this announcement seemed obvious. Since the extension of his contract in January 2023, it was certain that his mandate would end in 2026. However, not warning his captain, the man on whom he relied for so long, seems to reveal a persistent unease between the two men.

An already weakened relationship

The relationship between Deschamps and Mbappé has deteriorated for several months. Absences in October, sidelined in November: so many episodes which testify to a divorce between the coach and his captain. Daniel Riolo, in After Foot on RMC Sport, recently confirmed that “relations between the two are broken”.

This silence from the Bayonne technician can be seen as a new mark of distrust towards Mbappé. The future former coach, although renowned for his management of egos, here missed an opportunity to show consideration for his captain.

A page that turns under tension

If Deschamps sought to defuse any controversy by announcing his departure well in advance, his gesture risks accentuating the gap with the Bondyn prodigy. The next few months, which will mark the start of the home stretch for DD, will be decisive in seeing if reconciliation is possible before the World Cup.

With this announcement and the unsaid things surrounding it, Deschamps left one last ambiguous mark in his history with the Blues. An exit which, instead of easing tensions, could well revive divisions.
