Pavard, is it over?

Injured a month and a half ago with Inter Milan, Benjamin Pavard will return to competition in the coming days but has probably lost his starting place in defense. His competitor in defense is the Nerazzurri’s best player at the moment.

“The level and consistency of Yann Bisseck is just stratospheric”launched the Inter FR account on X on December 28. The German central defender is one of Inter Milan’s best players in recent times. And this, at the expense of Benjamin Pavard! The French international has been in competition since the start of the season with Bisseck for the right central position in Simone Inzaghi’s 3-5-2 and the young colossus of 24 years (1.96 m) has largely won his place alongside captains Stefan de Vrij and Alessandro Bastoni.

La Gazzetta dello Sport painted a very laudatory portrait of Bisseck. Questioned on this subject, Walter Samuel, the former essential rock of Inter from 2005 to 2014 (now in the staff of Lionel Scaloni’s Argentina team), validates the
hype (even if he spontaneously quotes Pavard): “It didn’t surprise me, it was to be expected and now it’s growing with every game. It was not easy to find a place in such a well-stocked sector and there is also Pavard in this position, who always knows what to do when he plays..

Pavard, new lining?

Pavard could therefore pay dearly for his muscle injury on November 26 during the Champions League match against Leipzig. Victim of a ruptured hamstring (the muscles at the back of the thigh), the 2018 world champion needed a month of rest before resuming training before the start of the new year. He continued his rehabilitation in Lombardy while his team flew to Saudi Arabia for the Italian Super Cup (2-0 victory against Atalanta in the semi-final, last Thursday; 3-2 defeat against Milan in the final, Monday).

The French international is announced to be ready to join the squad during the trip to Venice on Sunday in Serie A, but he could well be relegated to the role of Bisseck’s understudy during the next few weeks of competition. The 3rd in Serie A (with four points less than Naples, who have played two more matches) and 6th in the Champions League face Sparta Prague and Monaco in C1 at the end of the month. The Nerazzurri coach is just rotating during European matches for the moment.
