It was not with his family in Marseille or at his home in Madrid that Zinédine Zidane celebrated the transition to the new year. “Zizou” and his wife Véronique have set down their suitcases in Andalusia in recent days and for good reason. The three sons who are still professional footballers play in the southernmost region of Spain: Luca Zidane, 26-year-old goalkeeper in Granada, Théo Zidane, 22-year-old midfielder in Cordoba, and Elyaz, 19-year-old full-back from Real Betis B team.
While Luca earned his number 1 spot at Grenada CF, which plays for the top spots in Liga 2, Théo ended the year as a cannonball with Cordoba CF, also in the Spanish D2, scoring four times and giving an assist during the last month and a half of competition. The number 7 trained at Real Madrid was even named among the best midfielders in
Marca and Internet users can include him in the half-season team of LaLiga Hypermotion (official name of Liga 2).
Zidane in Cordoba training
The Zidane couple, almost incognito, arrived at training in Cordoba on Friday, during the second session of the year for Théo and his teammates, nine days before the resumption match against Almeria, at home. Both of Théo’s parents got a special place as they watched training from the sidelines. Zidane was also seen in a shopping center in the city known worldwide for its mosque-cathedral. Unemployed since May 2021 and his departure from Real, he is still waiting to become the coach of the France team.
Note that Zidane, headliner of the Real Galacticos of the 2000s, once faced Ivan Ania, the Cordoba coach (who played left winger during his playing career). It was in December 2001 against CD Tenerife for a victory in the Real championship (0-2) with goals from Ivan Helguera (served by Claude Makélélé) and Luis Figo (from the penalty spot). “Zizou” was associated with Raul and Fernando Morientes in the offensive sector and was replaced by Pedro Munitis at the end of the match.
