Seko Fofana, a comeback that does not pass

We can put ourselves in the shoes of the supporters of the Racing club de Lens. Seeing Seko Fofana with the Stade Rennais jersey should not have made them jump to the ceiling. The Ivorian midfielder had become a symbol of the renewal of the northern club during his experience with the Sang et Or for three seasons (2020 to 2023). And leaving Lens for the millions of Saudi Arabia was not particularly appreciated by the RC Lens community either.

We were also surprised to see the 29-year-old fail in a championship whose level oscillates between Ligue 2 and the National elite. Seko Fofana, whose qualities are recognized by many observers, did not win at Al-Nassr where he was transferred in the summer of 2023 for 25 million euros. The Saudi club, non-existent in the media before the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo in January 2023, even loaned Fofana in January 2024 to Al-Ettifaq, another team in the Saudi Pro League.

Failed debut with Rennes

Obviously in an impasse in Saudi Arabia, Seko Fofana therefore took a return to the French Championship as an emergency exit. But in order to be able to play with Stade Rennais, the Paris native had to resign from the board of directors of the Racing club de Lens. Seko Fofana, shareholder of Sang et Or, however, retains the shares acquired at the time of departure to Saudi Arabia.

Friday evening, he played his first minutes with Rennes. Entering in the 64th minute, he was unable to prevent the defeat of Jorge Sampaoli’s team in Nice, 3-2, at the opening of the 16th day of Ligue 1.
