While the Gones are aiming for a 30th victory against this opponent to stay in the race for Europe, the Héraultais, on the brink of the abyss, hope to limit the damage against a team full of confidence.
Lyon, launched towards Europe?
Despite a defeat against Paris Saint-Germain in their last league match in 2024 (2-1), Lyon ended the year with positive momentum. With only two losses in their last 17 meetings in all competitions, Pierre Sage’s men are among the strongest teams in Ligue 1.
In the league, resounding victories against Angers (3-0) and Nice (4-2) allowed the Lyonnais to stay two points behind Lille and four behind Monaco, which has one more match. A victory this evening would bring them even closer to the podium, in a fierce fight for European places.
At the same time, Lyon qualified for the round of 16 of the Coupe de France after easily defeating Feignies-Aulnoye (2-0). Better yet, on the European scene, they achieved a feat by beating Eintracht Frankfurt (3-2), ending the Germans’ unbeaten streak in the Europa League. However, one downside remains: Lyon has not won its first match after the winter break in the last three seasons.
Montpellier, a never-ending crisis
For Montpellier, the situation is catastrophic. Jean-Louis Gasset and his players finished 2024 in last place in Ligue 1 with just nine points, and their humiliation in the Coupe de France against fourth-tier Le Puy (0-4) marked a point of no return. This setback, the heaviest ever suffered by a Ligue 1 team against an amateur club, illustrates the failures of the Héraultais this season.
With 11 defeats in their last 15 matches and no away victories, Montpellier seems doomed. However, they remain only four points away from maintaining. But facing a reinvigorated Lyon, it’s difficult to imagine a miracle this evening.
