Arriving at the head of Manchester United last November, Rúben Amorim promised not to recruit players from his former club, Sporting Portugal, during this winter transfer window. However, the poor results of the Red Devils, currently 14th in the Premier League, pushed the Portuguese technician to review his position.
According to the Daily StarAmorim reportedly asked its leaders to recruit Swedish striker Viktor Gyökeres, author of 26 goals in 24 games this season. “Viktor must stay until the end of the season, but it is difficult to resist a player of this level,” he declared in November, already hinting at his intentions.
A transfer worth 100 million euros?
Sporting Portugal set Gyökeres’ release clause at 100 million euros, an amount that Manchester United could hardly afford after investing 214.5 million last summer. To finance this transfer, the club would consider a massive downsizing, including the departures of Marcus Rashford, Casemiro, and even Antony.
A delicate situation, especially since the president of Sporting, Frederico Varandas, insisted on respecting the initial agreement with Amorim. The coach will have to convince his leaders to act quickly to hope to revive a stalled attack, silent in its last three matches.
