Olympique Lyonnais is working behind the scenes to anticipate the possible departure of Ryan Cherki, expected by many clubs this winter or next summer. Faced with this possibility, the Rhone club is looking for a high-level profile capable of playing as a playmaker or on the wings. A renowned target has been identified: an experienced player, several times European champion, currently under contract with Paris Saint-Germain. If this transfer is successful, it would represent a huge blow for OL, in search of renewal.
A bold bet for Lyon
According to the X PSG Inside Actu account, Olympique Lyonnais have set their sights on Marco Asensio, the former Real Madrid player. Arriving at PSG a year and a half ago, the Spanish international is struggling to establish himself in the squad led by Luis Enrique. Despite his experience and technical qualities, he is overshadowed by other Parisian stars and could be asked to leave the club this winter.
Aged 28, Asensio has an impressive track record, including three Champions League wins under the Madrid colors. His versatility, which allows him to play both as a number 10 and on the wings, corresponds perfectly to the profile sought by Pierre Sage, the Gones coach.
A complex operation
However, several obstacles stand on the road to Lyon. In addition to competition from teams like Inter Milan, Bayer Leverkusen or even MLS clubs, OL will also have to deal with the constraints imposed by the DNCG, which prohibits them from recruiting this winter. Lyon could therefore be forced to wait until next summer to try to make this operation a reality, provided that Asensio is still available at that time.
Despite these difficulties, OL’s interest in a player of this caliber demonstrates their ambition. If Marco Asensio were to join Les Gones, he would undoubtedly become one of the leading figures of the Lyon project for the seasons to come.
