With the opening of the winter transfer window, Olympique de Marseille is working to strengthen its squad. A player playing in a major championship is now at the top of the Marseille club’s list of priorities.

The first half of the season allowed OM to climb to second place in Ligue 1, but Roberto De Zerbi, keen to improve the defensive solidity of his team, wants the arrival of a quality central defender. To meet this expectation, Marseille leaders have identified a promising player in the squad of an English top player: Jakub Kiwior, replacement at Arsenal since the start of the season.

A serious track in England

According to information from Editon Marseille, the Polish defender, recruited by Arsenal in January 2023 for 20 million euros from La Spezia, has become a priority for the Olympians. Aged 24, Kiwior has played eight games this season, often in the shadow of indisputable starters William Saliba and Gabriel. This versatile left-hander, also capable of playing as a left-back, corresponds to the profile sought by Roberto De Zerbi to solidify his back line.

The winter transfer window will not be as simple as hoped for De Zerbi.

An ambitious operation for OM

Despite OM’s growing interest, the challenge will be above all financial. Linked to Arsenal until 2028, Kiwior would cost around 20 million euros, a significant sum for a club which must first downsize its workforce. Among the players on the departure list are Chancel Mbemba, Lilian Brassier and Bamo Meïté, the latter being coveted by FC Nantes.

For Pablo Longoria and Medhi Benatia, this transfer could represent a strategic investment, allowing OM to build a robust defense for years to come. However, succeeding in convincing Arsenal and financing this operation remains a real challenge.
